First and foremost,

From the April '08 issue of GQ:

[livejournal.com profile] smallfandomfest's prompts are open for claiming. American Gods, Batman Begins, Being Human, The Boondock Saints, Burn Notice, Chuck, Dark Angel, Entourage, Eureka, Green Wing, Iron Man, Jericho, Moonlight, Pushing Daisies, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Tin Man... That's just a sampling of the fandoms.

There's a new book club-type community open, [livejournal.com profile] bookring. It's the first one I've joined, and I am super psyched about maybe cracking open a book or two this summer and having people to discuss it with. I was going to say it'll be good for me to spend time reading away from the computer, but there's every chance I'll be reading the books in e-book format. :D

Does anyone on my flist watch Reaper? I haven't discussed it much this season because I thought it kind of went downhill after the first episode, but I caught up the other day and the last half of the season wasn't too bad at all.

This episode felt so much darker to me than any other one this season. Not that it dealt with anything darker than other episodes have, but it just felt like it dealt with the darker themes differently. Every time there was a downer of a moment, I expected there to be a joke immediately following to lighten things up, and sometimes there wasn't. It left me feeling a little off-balance.

I really liked this episode for a number of reasons (I'm sorry, but any episode with Tony and/or Steve is automatically awesome), but the reactions of everyone re: Sam's father's death really rang unrealistic for me. Maybe I'm just used to seeing grief on TV played out with tears and throwing things and group hugs, but even Sam just seemed...unaffected. I can't imagine that he wouldn't have insisted on staying home with his mom for at least the night to console her, even if he wasn't feeling the grief just yet. She didn't seem affected either, but why would he assume she was going to be fine? And for his friends not to have said, uh, dude, maybe you should be with your family right now - that just really bothered me.

So what's the deal with his parents? Any theories? Mine currently is that they're both demons and the devil charged them with raising Sam on Earth. I don't know if that fits entirely, I haven't completely thought it through.

We have to wait until JANUARY next year for this to come back? UNACCEPTABLE.

Also, I watched the first episode of So You Think You Can Dance, because my nights are going to be so empty that I need a new show. And I can't dance my way out of a paper bag, so watching other people do it well makes me a little giddy. I watched it on my computer, and it was minimized about half the time because I could not stand to watch some of the people humiliate themselves. SO BAD.

yes, indeed.

but the reactions of everyone re: Sam's father's death really rang unrealistic for me. Maybe I'm just used to seeing grief on TV played out with tears and throwing things and group hugs, but even Sam just seemed...unaffected.

I'm too tired to think properly right now, but I completely agree. their reactions were just way off. and I didn't get why Sam wasn't more confused by his mom's reaction.

[identity profile] quarterturn.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly. I can understand his mom's reaction more after seeing the end of the episode (obviously she knew her husband wasn't dead, so it makes sense), but Sam would have no idea. I guess I can fanwank his detachment as shock or something, but. Still.

And I forgot to mention it in the entry, but why in the world didn't Tony save Sam's dad at the same time? I can't imagine he couldn't have carried them both off, so unless he knows something about Sam's parents that Sam doesn't...

[identity profile] arathesane.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, as you said I understand her reaction after seeing the end but Sam's reaction makes no sense. and I could explain it away if he indeed seemed shocked but he seemed more, like, indifferent.

I didn't get that either, I mean Tony not rescuing him obviously serves the plot but it doesn't seem to make sense.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is so freakishly hot. It's so weird. And I always feel pervy because somewhere in my head he's still, as your tag says, that kid from 3rd rock.

Oooh Reaper. It's so underdiscussed on my flist.

It really did feel darker, but the reactions were SO odd. I mean, his mom's reaction was fake, so it's okay, but yeah, Sam is such a sweet guy, he totally would have stayed with her and comforted her. :/

I'm sorry, but any episode with Tony and/or Steve is automatically awesome.

So true.

The demon thing would make sense, what with his dad being still alive an all. I am wondering whether his mom isn't his actual mom, though. I don't know, I'm confused. :D
Also, am I the only one who's slightly disturbed by the fact that this means Sam dated his half-sister? I mean, it was obvious he would be his son, but I still find this slightly weird :D

JANUARY? WHAT? REALLY? *headdesk*

I thought about joining an lj book club for some time, is there a reason you chose this one?

[identity profile] quarterturn.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
And I always feel pervy because somewhere in my head he's still, as your tag says, that kid from 3rd rock.

Me, too! Which doesn't even make sense, because he's actually older than I am. But I still feel weird thinking he's hot because I sort of watched him grow up.

I don't know if Reaper just isn't that popular fandom-wise or if I just don't have that many people on my flist that watches it. :(

Sam is such a sweet guy, he totally would have stayed with her and comforted her.

Exactly! His whole attitude after his dad died was just so off, I kept waiting for him to break down or for something to explain why he wasn't more upset. And the straw man thing that Sock and Ben did for him was sweet, but it felt like a really inappropriate time, you know? It seemed like something that would have been more appropriate to do after a couple of days had gone by and they realized the family wasn't going to do a funeral or anything.

this means Sam dated his half-sister

Was it proven that Katie (I'm not sure if that's how it's spelled) was the devil's daughter? I mean, I was fairly sure she was, even though the devil dismissed the idea and Sam saw her through those "show their true face" glasses. The fact that he dated his half-sister was one of the first things that went through my mind when they alluded that Sam was the devil's son. Reaper was not the show I was expecting to have canon incest in it! *lol*

Yeah, they only ordered 13 new episodes, so it's coming in as a mid-season replacement. :(

Someone on my flist created this book club, and I kind of feel more comfortable joining up with one where I at least know one other person, and it's just in the baby stages of starting, so everyone's kind of on equal footing, you know? I haven't really checked out a lot of other lj book clubs, but I'd be worried that I'd have no clue where to even begin joining in.

REAPER!!! i love that show so much, mostly because sock is fucking hilarious. and gay demons? I MEAN C'MON. anything with gay demons in it.

but, yeah, i totally see where you're coming from. nobody seemed utterly grief-stricken like normal people would after their husband/father dies. they just seemed bummed. like, wtf?

also: remember he had a brother that never came back after the pilot? of course, i watched the original pilot with the different andi actress, who was ten squillion times better.

i dunno, it's my tuesday night comedy, i love it, but only because it's slashy and sock fucking wins hands down. <33

HOW DID I NOT KNOW YOU WATCHED THIS SHOW? I love Sock. Adore him. Absolutely my favorite character on the show, although Steve is a close second.

The brother! I actually just re-watched the pilot the other day and was like, heyyyyyy, Sam's brother! Where'd he go? I watched the original pilot first, and then the aired pilot, and yeah, I definitely liked the first Andi better, but I don't mind this one all too much.

Haha, you know that fic I was worried about posting? It's a Reaper fic. :D And I've been wanting to write a Reaper/SPN crossover SO EFFING BADLY, but I can't find the right balance between the Reaper humor and SPN's darkness. And also there are two Sam's, which would get really confusing. :D

[identity profile] mytimehaspassed.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
DUDE REAPER FIC? POOOOOSSSSTTTTT IT. I WOULD LOVE IT TO ITTY BITTY PIECES!

yeah, but reaper/spn? they have SO MANY similarities. i mean demons and the whole selling your soul thing, it's like the same show, but reaper's pretty much a comedy and spn's pretty much a drama. HOWEVER, dean/sock FTW, y/y? they are total badasses that know how to crack me the fuck up.

and tony and steve need to make an appearance. as GAY DEMONS WHO ARE AWESOME. michael ian black is my super fave. <3333

shannon

[identity profile] quarterturn.livejournal.com 2008-05-29 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
SOMEDAY I WILL I SWEAR.

Exactly! The only thing that wouldn't mesh very well is the whole demon mythology (SPN has all demons as previously human, right? Or is it just the black-eyed ones?)

DEAN/SOCK YYYYYYYY. They would totally get high together in the back of the Impala and give sloppy/awkward handjobs lol. While Sam (Winchester) and Ben sat inside disapprovingly.

Michael Ian Black is FANTASTIC.

I am so glad to hear that you gave SYTYCD try! It's all that keeps me going throughout the summer, lol. And having been a dancer myself, I geek out really hardcore about it so the more people I know are watching it, the better!

[identity profile] quarterturn.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really glad I gave it a try, too! I'm definitely psyched to see what happens, I've already kind of got my favorites that I'm hoping will make it on to the actual show, so I don't think it's going to be hard for me to get invested in it. :D

[identity profile] inpurity.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
OH.....
Joseph Gordon Levitt.... Oh...

Gorgeous.

[identity profile] quarterturn.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
He so is. I think he's even more attractive because of the roles he takes, too. Have you ever seen Manic? Hands down my favorite movie/role of his.

[identity profile] inpurity.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't, but I have heard a lot about it.
I am gonna make sure to watch it soon.

[identity profile] rhombal.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I totally need to catch up with Reaper. I gave up on it after a few episodes since I had too much to watch already, but I really did like the show.

Also! SYTYCD is looking to be pretty awesome this year. It's kind of sad that the contestants are even weirder than those on American Idol, but I really, really like listening to Nigel's commentary; he's tough without being overly mean, and he gives credit where credit is due. I do a little bit of ballroom dancing, so those are always the performances that I like the most. :D

[identity profile] quarterturn.livejournal.com 2008-05-29 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
It definitely gets better as the season goes on.

I don't mind Nigel at all, like you said he's not actually cruel but can get the point across. I'm not sure I like the dark-haired judge though...Mary? She seems like she's kind of out to be unlikable.

!!! So jealous! I would love to ballroom dance, how awesome.
